BEST OF KYOTO SUMMER NIGHTS

Aug 17, 2026

BY Maria Diaz

Summer in Kyoto is hot, really hot! But when the sun goes down, the ancient capital transforms into a magical wonderland. The heat fades away, and the city lights up with incredible night events that you just have to see. I’ve picked some amazing summer night events that are perfect for your summer trip. Let’s dive in!

Scenic Night Illumination

This is the perfect event for those who want to chill. The Eizan Electric Railway turns its famous “Momiji Tunnel” into a stunning summer night attraction called the “Fresh Green Maple Illumination”, a magical train ride where the roughly 250-meter stretch of tunnel between Ichihara and Ninose Stations on the Kurama Line is bathed in soft, glowing light, highlighting the vibrant fresh green leaves instead of the usual autumn reds. To make the experience even more immersive, the train dims its interior lights and slows down as it passes through the illuminated tunnel, giving passengers a perfect view of the shimmering greenery, while nearby stops like Ninose, Kibuneguchi, and Kurama Stations also get their own enchanting illuminations.

The event runs on specific evening trains: on weekdays, catch the Kurama-bound trains leaving Demachiyanagi between 6:13 pm and 8 pm, or the return trains from Kurama between 6:30 pm and 8:20 pm (with a special later run until 8:45 pm on August 14th); on weekends and holidays, look for Demachiyanagi departures between 6 pm and 8 pm, and Kurama departures between 6:20 pm and 8:45 pm. There’s no extra fee; just pay the standard train fare. So this is an affordable and unforgettable way to enjoy a cool, breezy summer evening in Kyoto.

Traditional cormorant fishing at dusk – Photo Credit: Nippon Ryoko Magazine

Arashiyama Ukai

This is a traditional fishing method with over 1,300 years of history, dating back to the Heian period, where skilled fishermen use trained cormorant birds to catch ayu (sweetfish) on the Oi River. Here’s how it works: each fisherman leads some cormorants on leashes who swim alongside the boat, dive underwater, and catch fish by swallowing them whole. The fish are kept in a special pouch in the bird’s throat, and a snare near the base of the neck prevents them from swallowing larger catches, allowing the fisherman to retrieve the fish later. Each boat carries a large fire hanging from its bow, which attracts the fish to the surface and provides dramatic torchlight for the show.

Tourists can watch from the riverbank or, for the best experience, hop on a sightseeing boat for a 30-40 minute ride that brings you close to the action. For an even more magical evening, some cruises include a live shamisen performance by a former maiko, adding elegant music to the flickering firelight. And to add even more to this amazing traditional experience, alcohol and snacks are allowed on board if you want to make it a cozy summer night out. But please, be aware that the event may be canceled in bad weather.

Evenings bring a warm glow to Nene’s Path, while the temple park buzzes with food stalls from popular Kyoto shops, creating a cheerful fair-like atmosphere. Love taking cute pictures? This is your dream spot! The golden lights and moonlit gardens make every photo look postcard-perfect, and since it’s a nighttime event, you can enjoy all that beauty without the daytime crowds. Uzumasa Bon Dance

This summer, Toei Kyoto Studio Park is throwing an absolutely fantastic night party called the Uzumasa Summer Night Festival, and the best part? You get to choose your own adventure: dance with Kyoto’s elegant stars or party with playful, mischievous monsters! The festival is split into these two exciting parts. From July 18th to August 14th, it’s all about “Dancing with Kyoto”, where traditional bon odori meets groovy city-pop music, and you can shake your hips alongside real maiko and geiko from Kyoto’s famous geisha district, plus high-five and dance with beloved heroes like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and the colorful Pretty Cure girls, it’s a magical mashup of old Japan and pop culture! Then from August 15th to 30th, the park takes a spookier turn with “Dancing with Yokai”, where cheeky Japanese ghosts and monsters take over the floor for some silly, supernatural fun that kids and adults will both love. The bon odori dances happen every night from 7 pm to 8 pm, and no experience is needed; just follow the crowd and have a blast!

This stunning temple opens its doors for a special Summer Night Viewing that coincides with the sacred Senja-mairi (Thousand-Day Pilgrimage), a once-a-year chance to experience this iconic temple in a completely different, magical light. During the evenings of August 14th to 16th, the temple holds a special evening visit, allowing visitors to explore the temple grounds and enter the inner sanctuary of the Main Hall, which is not usually open to the public, for an exclusive and deeply spiritual experience. The nighttime setting offers a cool escape from the summer heat, with the illuminated wooden stage and the stunning city views from the hillside creating a truly unforgettable atmosphere, a peaceful contrast to the bustling daytime crowds.

Candles illuminating ancient stone figures – Photo Credit: The Sankei Shimbun

Thousand Lantern Offering

Every summer, Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple turns into a glowing sea during the Thousand Lantern Offering, a beautiful ceremony that honors the memory of those who have passed away. The tradition started over a hundred years ago, when local villagers collected thousands of old stone statues and pagodas that were scattered across the ancient burial grounds of Adashino, and brought them together in a touching display of respect. As night falls, the area called “Sa no Kawara” comes alive with a warm, magical light as visitors place tiny candles inside the 8,000 stone figures of Buddhas and bodhisattvas that sit in peaceful rows across the moss-covered ground. It’s a deeply touching experience that goes beyond just sightseeing; it invites everyone to slow down, think about the beauty and shortness of life, and feel a quiet connection to the past. It’s one of those rare, special moments that stays with you long after the last candle goes out, so I wouldn’t miss this one if you’re in Kyoto.

Date: August 29th – 30th

Time: 5:30 pm – 9 pm (8:30 pm closing of reception)

Admission: ¥1,000

Address: 17番地 Sagatoriimoto Adashinocho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8436

Whether you’re dancing, strolling, or just soaking in the atmosphere, these evenings remind you that the best memories are made after dark. So step outside, feel the cool breeze, and let the night surprise you. This is the Kyoto you’ll never forget.
