Tokyo is a city that moves effortlessly between past and future. In the quiet neighborhood of Yanaka, you can still feel the rhythm of old Edo. Narrow lanes wind past wooden homes, small temples, and family-run shops that have served the community for generations. Just steps from bustling Nippori Station, Yanaka Ginza’s nostalgic shopping street invites visitors to slow down and experience a more intimate side of Tokyo.

Now, this historic neighborhood is welcoming a new addition that blends global coffee culture with local creativity. Opening on March 28, the Starbucks Café & Art Gallery Yanaka Gotenzaka introduces a unique concept where coffee, art, and community come together in a thoughtful way.
At first glance, the two-story building fits naturally into its surroundings. Designed by a Yanaka-based architectural firm, the structure uses warm wood and clean lines to echo the neighborhood’s traditional aesthetic rather than overshadow it. The result is a space that feels contemporary yet respectful of the area’s long history.

Inside, the experience goes beyond the familiar café setting. The new location will host rotating art exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing works from emerging artists, local students, and collaborative projects with Starbucks partners. It is designed as an evolving gallery where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee while discovering new creative voices.
The opening exhibition, running from March 28 through June 28, features three young artists: Karin Hosono, Shotaro Sanada, and Yu Sora. Their works capture the atmosphere of Yanaka through fresh perspectives, reflecting the textures of temple roofs, quiet alleyways, and the everyday beauty of the neighborhood. Some pieces will even be available for purchase, making this one of the most unique Starbucks locations in Japan.
Upstairs, guests can sip their coffee surrounded by art while looking out over the gentle slope of Gotenzaka Street. Just outside the door, you will still find the beloved shops that define the area, including longtime local favorite Nakanoya, known for its traditional tsukudani preserved foods.
